SCENES FROM A MOVIE “The Pulse”

I’m kind of surprised SCENES FROM A MOVIE’s The Pulse isn’t a Fueled By Ramen release considering how closely the band resembles FALL OUT BOY, THE ACADEMY IS…, and PANIC! AT THE DISCO. While this quintet stays far from the over-the-top antics of the latter band mentioned, there’s no denying the vocal and lyrical resemblances. Tony Bush is at the helm of SCENES FROM A MOVIE, offering a vocal performance in the vein of Patrick Stump, Brendon Urie, blah, blah, blah. He also utilizes the same quick manner to deliver the all-too-familiar “trying too hard to be clever and witty” lyrics (“well ask me how I’m so matter of fact/ well the fact of the matter is it’s just a matter of tact, oh, oh/ there will be nobody left here to save you”). Backing Bush is a more than capable group of pop-rockers. Despite their seemingly well-rounded performance, the songwriting and hooks are nothing more than second-rate (and what’s with the brief Mission Impossible-esque riff in “Detective, Detective?”). I’d like to stay positive regarding the band’s future, but in all honesty, it’d take a huge miracle for SCENES FROM A MOVIE to lift themselves out from the mediocrity they’re currently submerged in.
