DAYTRADER – “Last Days of Rome”

Last Days of Rome is the debut EP from this new Long Island all-star group, featuring current/former members of CRIME IN STEREO, LATTERMAN, and BRIDGE AND TUNNEL. While that member pedigree ought to leave Long Island music fans drooling over possibly style scenarios, DAYTRADER leaves most prior-band baggage in the dust. Tuning into an emo/post-hardcore sound that’s a cross between TEXAS IS THE REASON and “Woodson” by THE GET UP KIDS, the band prescribes high doses of melody and thumpin’ honesty for a good time.  Vocalist Tym Barash (ex-DIVIDER) has a breakout performance on Last Days, singing in a style that’s like pop-punk with a vengeance… Through Being Cool SAVES THE DAY in an older, mature bend. Although the EP only spans five songs, it feels longer and complete from having songs of various tempos and gyrations. “Living” the second track on here kicks off with a blazing drum and guitar intro that sounds like This Time Next Year era MOVIELIFE, while fourth track “Grey-Colored Glasses” chugs with a patient, mid-tempo crunch. Closer “Death Means Nothing To Men Like Me” (Camus!) puts all of the bands influences together in its three and half minutes, culminating with a bouncy up-and-down drum beat over needling guitars. It’s very, very young in 2011, but this is already on the must-listen list for new releases.
