Transmissions of an Unknown Origin: Desert Island Disks Column by Chad Mitchell
Transmissions of an Unknown Origin: Desert Island Disks
I guess this is an introduction of my musical taste; even though I’ve been writing for this zine for five months. Along with that, this is also a copout to writing a real column. Recently in class I was told to choose my top ten albums to take with me on a desert island. Here is my top ten, with short explanations. They aren’t in order, they won’t stay the same, but for now, here are my choices.
JEFF BUCKLEY- Grace- My favorite vocalist of all time. This man wrote a masterpiece then tragically lost his life.
JIMMY EAT WORLD- Clarity- I really think JIMMY EAT WORLD is the best in the world at what they. This album covers every emotion within me. For a long time this was my favorite ever, it may still be.
THE SNAKE THE CROSS THE CROWN- Mander Salis- I have no idea why I love this album so much. Each song is its own sound, but not one track lets me down.
THE MARS VOLTA- De-Loused in the Comatorium- No one sounds like THE MARS VOLTA. This is easily one of the most complicated albums I own, and I would love to analyze every part. With every listen I still am amazed at what makes no sense, but makes fantastic music
SUFJAN STEVENS- Seven Swans- This is beauty stripped down to one man and his ideas. I’ve never used the word adore before, but it’s the perfect word to describe how I feel about this man.
REFUSED- The Shape of Punk to Come- Will anyone ever be able to replicate the sincerity and importance of this release in the world of punk rock?
TAKEN- And They Slept- There has to be metal on this list. TAKEN has been the most important band in my life. This album is amazing.
WEEZER- The Blue Album- The first CD I ever bought just so happens to have lasted to this day as one of my favorites. I can still sing every word, and it all puts a smile on my face.
BJORK- Vespertine- I had to have a BJORK album. I could fall in love with her just by hearing this record. My favorite female vocalist, this is beautiful.
THE AUTUMNS- The Autumns- Never have I been so affected by an album. I am satisfied with only having this release, because no matter what I put in after, it does not seem as good.
Each one of these releases has had a huge impact on my life. I strongly encourage anyone to give them a listen, and try to reciprocate the feelings I have when I hear them. Please feel free to email me your lists, as I love to know what everyone is into, and find new music. Chad@pastepunk.com if you’re interested.
